Pace relates to how relatively OUTGOING or RESERVED a person is.
An OUTGOING person tends to have a faster-pace. A person with a faster-pace likes to be on the go! He or she likes to take action. He or she likes to do things sooner rather than later.
A RESERVED person tends to like a slower-pace. A slower-pace person likes to move at a steady pace. In fact, keeping things the same sounds good to them. They think, “if it is not broke, don’t fix it.” They would rather do things later rather than sooner. Later gives some time to think about the change or prepare for the activity.
It is important to make sure that the team can accommodate the PACE preferences of the team members. You don’t want to run over people. You also do not want to slow people down who are trying to get something done. And, you need to be able to speed up sometimes and slow down sometimes.
A DISC personality test identifies a person’s PRIORITY preferences
Priority relates to how relatively TASK-ORIENTED or PEOPLE-ORIENTED a person is.
A TASK-ORIENTED person tends to prioritize and focus on TASKS. He or she tends to think and work in terms of reaching goals. They like check-lists and, even more, checking things off of their list. People can be important to a TASK-ORIENTED person, but the PRIORITY tends to be the TASK at any given moment.
A PEOPLE_ORIENTED person tends to prioritize and focus on PEOPLE. He or she tends to feel and relate in terms of relationships. They like to feel a connection with others in a way that is friendly and happy. They like teamwork, cooperation and everyone getting along primarily in terms of RELATIONSHIPS. For them, it is not primarily about getting things done, but about the relationships on the team. Productivity can be important to a PEOPLE-ORIENTED person, but the PRIORITY tends to be PEOPLE at any given moment.
The key is identifying and adapting to the other person’s PRIORITY. That is the biggest area of potential conflict. If one person has a task focus and the other person has a people focus, then there could be a big mismatch. No one wants conflict, but the potential is there – especially without understanding.
